Mandy Chan

Shanghai Jazz Trio

Shanghai Jazz Trio was created by vocalist Mandy Chan, Zhudi (Bamboo flute) player Sesily Zheng and pianist Siu Tin Chi in Rotterdam. The trio brings the golden ages of Shanghai jazz back on stage and emerges the audience into its unique crossover style between Chinese and Western music. The repertoire includes Shidaiqu ("songs of the era" in Mandarin, it is a type of Chinese folk and American jazz fusion music that originated in Shanghai, China, in the 1920s), for example, songs by the famous singers, Teresa Teng, Tsai Chin, Zhou Xuan, Bai Guang, Chang Loo, Li Xianglan, Tsin Ting, Yao Lee, Grace Chang, Poon Sow Keng, Rebecca Pan, Tsui Ping, etc.

"In China, the years of Old Shanghai are revived. Clothing, design, architecture and today's music are inspired by the time between 1920 and 1940. In the Netherlands, we do not know much about this fascinating period in Chinese history, in which the influence of the west was increasing. Many famous black American soloists and bands travelled to Shanghai, where they were received with open arms. This resulted in swinging Chinese and English jazz songs, chic ladies in sensual, silk Shanghai dresses (Qipao) and beautiful dance palaces (Paramount). At the time, Shanghai was the centre of Asia, which it is today."
